To lose a friend is the greatest of all losses.

− Pubilius Syrus

It is with great sadness that we write in tribute for Agniva Lahiri whose strength and valour moved and inspired us always. Agniva was only 37 years old when she passed away on September 20, 2016 due to liver failure.

Born on August 22, 1979, Agniva was a renowned LGBT social activist from Kolkata, who dedicated her life towards promoting and advocating for the rights and dignity of the transgender community. She founded an NGO in Kolkata called People Like Us (PLUS) that worked tirelessly to give life to her vision of equality.

India HIV/AIDS Alliance has been fortunate to work closely with Agniva through our Pehchan programme. Agniva was always a guide and a mentor, and her support was crucial in ensuring the success of the programme. She was a beacon of light and determination for us all!

Losing Agniva is a loss for India, especially our LGBT community. She had played a tremendous role in creating safe spaces for the community in India. She has been a sister and a friend to transgender activists across the country and has touched our lives in extraordinary ways. She always led by example, and today, now that she is no longer with us, she will be sorely missed.

We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and friends. Agniva’s zest for life and her example will always inspire us.

In loving memory,

The Alliance India Family
